AMU Class 11 Entrance: Science, Humanities, Commerce — or a Diploma? The After-Class-10 Route Map
Last verified: October 22, 2026 | Reading Time: 9 min | Author: Amit Kumar, Entrance Exam Specialist
When a student finishes Class 10, most families think about only one question: which board or school for Class 11? At Aligarh Muslim University, AMU opens two separate doors: admission to Class 11 in its Senior Secondary Schools (Science, Humanities, or Commerce streams), and admission to a 3-year Diploma in Engineering at its University Polytechnic. Both need an entrance test, and CONFIRMED: for the 2026-27 cycle, the tests for Senior Secondary Science, Senior Secondary Humanities/Commerce, and Diploma in Engineering were all held on the same day — April 26, 2026 (Indian Express, Tier-1).
The Guide to Admissions 2027-28 has not been released as of October 22, 2026 — so every 2027 date below is EXPECTED, based on the 2026-27 pattern. Everything else comes from the 2026-27 cycle's published pattern and is labelled as confirmed.
Door 1: Class 11 in AMU's Senior Secondary Schools
AMU runs its own schools for Class 11–12 under the School Board: the S.H. Senior Secondary School (Boys), STS School, AMU City School, the Senior Secondary School (Girls), and AMU Girls School (CONFIRMED: school names per the 2026-27 admissions cycle reporting; seat counts vary by school and should be checked in the new Guide). Students apply for one stream — Science, Humanities, or Commerce — and each stream has its own paper.
Science stream paper — CONFIRMED pattern (two independent Tier-2 sources reporting the 2026-27 cycle):
| Section | Marks |
|---|---|
| Science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Science) | 50 |
| Mathematics | 30 |
| General Knowledge | 10 |
| Indo-Islamic Culture | 10 |
| Total (objective, 1 mark per question) | 100 |
Humanities and Commerce stream paper — CONFIRMED structure: Social Studies (History, Civics, Geography, Economics) 60 marks, Mathematics 20 marks, General Knowledge and English 10 marks combined, Indo-Islamic Culture 10 marks — 100 objective questions, 100 marks total, no negative marking.
Three facts that change how you prepare (CONFIRMED for 2026-27): (1) the paper is set at the Class 9–10 level, close to NCERT — so your board syllabus is the syllabus; (2) the question paper is available in English, Hindi, and Urdu, so Hindi-medium UP Board students are not shut out; and (3) there is no negative marking, one mark per correct answer — attempt every question. These patterns were consistent across independent reporting of the official 2026 syllabus.
Eligibility: the 45% rule parents must check first
Before any preparation plan, check this — CONFIRMED from the 2026-27 Guide to Admissions:
- For the Science stream: passed Class 10 (AMU's Secondary School Certificate or equivalent) with at least 45% aggregate in English + Science (including Life Science) + Mathematics taken together, and you must have passed English, Mathematics, and Science individually.
- For Humanities/Commerce: the stream-specific percentage is set in the Guide each year — check the 2027-28 Guide when it releases; do not assume the Science figure applies.
- Age limit (CONFIRMED, 2026-27): not more than 19 years as on 1 July of the admission year for the Senior Secondary stream.
- Self-Financing Scheme (CONFIRMED, 2026-27): applicants wanting consideration under the self-financing seats for Class XI Science could opt in on the application form by paying an additional ₹200. Watch for whether this continues in 2027-28.
If your child is in Class 10 now, the single highest-leverage action is not a coaching batch — it is making sure the Class 10 board aggregate comfortably clears 45% in those three subjects, with no individual failure. Our AMU entrance coaching page explains how our batches build stream-specific preparation alongside board exams.
Door 2: Diploma in Engineering at the University Polytechnic
This is the route most Amroha families never hear about — and for the right student, it is excellent. AMU's University Polytechnic and Women's Polytechnic run AICTE-approved 3-year diplomas in branches including Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Computer, and Electronics Engineering (CONFIRMED). After the diploma, students can go for B.Tech lateral entry or directly into junior-engineer and technician roles.
Diploma admission test — CONFIRMED from the 2026-27 cycle: the entrance test was held on April 26, 2026, 10:00 AM–12:00 PM, and candidates needed a minimum of 20% marks in the test to qualify for counselling. Eligibility: Class 10 pass with at least 45% aggregate in English, Mathematics, and Science (three subjects of equal weightage), passing each subject individually. Applications for 2026-27 opened on February 1, 2026 and closed on February 28, 2026 without late fee (a late-fee window ran to March 15 with ₹500), with a ₹500 application processing fee for the general category. An age limit applies — the exact figure is set in each year's Guide, so confirm in the 2027-28 edition rather than relying on last year's number.
Polytechnic fees are subsidized under AMU's central-university status, with National Scholarship Portal scholarships for eligible students. Also see our coaching programs page for how we handle polytechnic-track mathematics differently from the Class 11 science track.
Which route fits your child? A coach's decision checklist
In our counselling sessions at JGPS, we use four questions — they resolve 90% of the Science-vs-Diploma dilemma:
| Question | Points toward |
|---|---|
| Does the child want JEE/NEET or a degree through AMU's own B.Tech/MBBS tests later? | Class 11 Science — it keeps every degree door open |
| Is the child drawn to machines, circuits, and hands-on work — and wants earning skills early? | Diploma in Engineering — practical from day one, B.Tech lateral entry later |
| Is Class 10 science/maths shaky (below ~60%) despite effort? | Diploma or Humanities/Commerce — the Science-stream test weights Science + Maths at 80 of 100 marks; be honest about the fit |
| Is money the deciding constraint? | Check both routes' Guides — both are subsidized, but seat types (and the self-financing option) change the math |
A common mistake: preparing for "AMU Class 11" generically. A Science-stream aspirant should spend roughly half their time on Science and a third on Maths; a Humanities/Commerce aspirant must treat Social Studies as the 60-mark battlefield. Different papers, different timetables — pick the stream first, then the plan. Read our AMU school admission age-limit and eligibility guide to double-check the basics before you lock the route.
The 2027 timeline — what to expect
EXPECTED (pattern-based, not official): the 2027-28 Guide to Admissions typically appears in the winter, application forms open around February 2027, and the Sr. Secondary and Diploma entrance tests fall in late April 2027 — the 2026-27 cycle used February 1–28 for applications and April 26 for the tests. Parents should monitor the official portal amucontrollerexams.com and keep documents ready using our documents checklist for the 2027 forms.
Do not trust any "confirmed 2027 date" you see on third-party pages right now — until AMU publishes the Guide, every 2027 date is an expectation. That discipline is what separates a reliable plan from a rumor.
