AMU vs JMI School Entrance: Which Should Your Child Target?
Last verified: 21 October 2026 | Reading Time: 8 min | Author: Amit Kumar
Two of India's most sought-after central university school systems sit within reach of every parent in western UP: Aligarh Muslim University's schools and Jamia Millia Islamia's schools in New Delhi. Both admit students to Classes 6 and 9 through their own entrance tests, both draw enormous applicant pools from Uttar Pradesh, and both are realistic targets from towns like Joya and Amroha. Yet parents constantly ask us one question in our office: are these two exams basically the same thing? They are not. Different patterns, different timelines, different test logistics — and choosing the right target shapes your child's entire preparation. This guide compares AMU and JMI school entrances fact by fact, so you can decide with confidence — or plan for both.
First, the 2027 status: neither notification is out yet
One fact to lock in before anything else: CONFIRMED — as of 24 September 2026, neither AMU nor Jamia Millia Islamia had released its school admission notification for 2027 (EntranceZone). Everything stated below about 2027 dates is therefore EXPECTED, based on the 2026 cycle pattern: applications opening around February 2027 and tests around March–April 2027. The two official sources to watch are amucontrollerexams.com for AMU and jmi.ac.in / admission.jmi.ac.in for JMI. Do not pay any agent or website claiming to have "confirmed" 2027 dates yet — the notification is genuinely awaited.

How the papers actually differ
The single biggest difference is the paper structure. AMU's Class 6 and 9 test follows a fixed, predictable format: 100 objective questions worth 100 marks in 2 hours, with no negative marking. The first 30 marks come from a language section — English, Urdu and Hindi — and the remaining 70 from Mathematics and Science. For a child from a UP board or Urdu-medium background, that language section is a genuine opportunity: 30 marks that reward what the child already studies every day. Our detailed breakdown of the AMU Class 6 syllabus and how coaching structures it is covered in this guide.
JMI's approach is different. Its written tests are built on the NCERT syllabus of the previous class, which means the test rewards strong school-level fundamentals rather than exam-specific tricks. There is no negative marking expected, and because the university holds the test in multiple cities — including Lucknow, which matters a lot for Amroha families — the logistics are kinder to outstation parents. Our JMI entrance coaching page explains how our batches handle the NCERT-based pattern, and the AMU coaching page covers the 100-mark structure in depth.
Difficulty and competition: read the numbers honestly
AMU publishes real participation figures, which is rare and useful. For the 2026 session, 8,695 candidates applied for Class VI, while Class IX drew 14,645 applicants of whom 12,326 actually appeared (India Education Diary) — CONFIRMED. Those numbers tell you two things: Class IX faces roughly double the applicant pressure of Class VI, and a meaningful share of applicants never reach the exam hall, which rewards consistent preparation over last-minute panic.
For JMI, we found no verified applicant counts in any reliable source — so be sceptical of any website quoting exact JMI competition numbers. What we can say honestly is this: both exams are competitive because both universities are prestigious, but "difficulty" for your child depends more on pattern fit than on raw applicant counts. A child strong in languages and quick arithmetic fits the AMU pattern; a child with rock-solid NCERT concepts fits the JMI pattern. The way toppers actually prepare for either is the same discipline — see our guide on how toppers use previous year papers.
Timelines and logistics for a UP parent
Both universities historically open applications in February and hold tests in March–April, so the two cycles run almost in parallel. That is good news and a warning: good news, because one preparation season can serve both; a warning, because the form windows are short — JMI's 2026 Class 6/9 window lasted exactly one month (5 February to 5 March), and missing it means waiting a full year. Set a reminder now rather than waiting for the notification.
On logistics, JMI's multicity testing (Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Kolkata, Srinagar — reported) is a real advantage for families in Amroha: Lucknow is far more practical than a Delhi-only test would be. AMU's tests are centred on Aligarh, which is also very manageable from our area. Either way, plan travel early — admit cards for both typically arrive about a week before the test.
Which should your child target? A parent's checklist
- Entry class: Both AMU and JMI offer Classes 6 and 9 through entrance tests. But JMI additionally offers Class 11 (Science, Commerce, Arts) — if your child is finishing Class 10, JMI is the clear option of the two.
- Language strength: AMU's Section I puts 30 of 100 marks on English, Urdu and Hindi. If your child is genuinely strong in Urdu or Hindi, the AMU pattern converts that strength into marks.
- NCERT fundamentals: JMI's paper is NCERT-of-previous-class based. A child who tops school exams but has never done entrance-style MCQs will find JMI's pattern more familiar.
- Eligibility first: Age rules are a hard gate at both universities — an ineligible application is rejected regardless of marks. Check our AMU age-limit eligibility guide and run the free eligibility checker before any preparation begins.
- Test city and travel: Factor in Aligarh versus the multicity options including Lucknow when you plan the exam season with your child.
Can you target both in the same year?
Yes — and many JGPS families do exactly that. AMU and JMI are separate universities with separate forms, separate portals and separate tests, so nothing stops a child from applying to both. The preparation overlaps heavily at the foundation level (NCERT concepts, arithmetic speed, language skills); what differs is pattern-specific practice — the 100-mark MCQ structure for AMU versus the NCERT-based written style for JMI. This is precisely why our batches are grouped by target exam: the shared base is taught once, and pattern-specific test practice is layered on top. Here is how our AMU/JMI Batch 2027 is structured, step by step.
One last honest note: with both 2027 notifications awaited and forms EXPECTED around February 2027, the families who start pattern-based preparation now — not after the notification — are the ones who use the short form window calmly instead of panicking.
