JMI Class 6 Entrance 2027: Pattern, Syllabus and the Coaching Plan That Works
Last verified: 23 October 2026 | Reading Time: 9 min | Author: Amit Kumar
Every year, hundreds of Class 5 students enter Jamia Millia Islamia's schools through the Class 6 entrance test — one of the few lateral entry points into a central university school system. On the surface the paper looks simple: Class 5 NCERT, 100 marks, two hours. But the pattern hides a strategic surprise that most parents miss, and it completely changes how a coaching batch should structure preparation. This guide breaks down the verified pattern, the chapter-level syllabus, the form and fee situation for 2027, and the 12-week plan coaches actually use.
A note on 2027 dates: JMI had not released the 2027-28 school admission notification as of 24 September 2026, when a check of jmi.ac.in showed no school-admission update. The pattern, syllabus and fees below are CONFIRMED from the university's 2026-27 school admission prospectus; all 2027 dates are EXPECTED from the usual calendar and are marked as such.
JMI Class 6 Entrance: The Verified Exam Pattern
The Class 6 admission test is a single written examination — no interview stage is listed for Class 6 in the prospectus, which already makes it different from AMU's two-stage process. The paper runs for two hours in offline OMR mode, the question paper is available in English, Hindi and Urdu, calculators are not allowed, and there is no negative marking — so every attempted guess is free.
| Section | Questions | Marks |
|---|---|---|
| Environmental Studies (EVS) | 50 | 50 |
| Mathematical and Numeracy Skill Test | 25 | 25 |
| Language (English) Test | 25 | 25 |
| Total | 100 | 100 |
Read that table again: EVS carries half the paper. This is the single biggest coaching insight for JMI Class 6. Most students spend equal time on all three sections, but a coach who knows the paper weights EVS reading — Class 5 NCERT "Looking Around" chapters — as the top priority, because 50 of the 100 marks sit there. With no negative marking, the maths section becomes a speed-and-accuracy game where every confident answer adds up without risk.
The Syllabus: Class 5 NCERT, Chapter by Chapter
The prospectus publishes the actual Class 5 NCERT chapters the test draws from. Here is what coaches work with:
EVS (50 marks) — drawn from NCERT Class 5 "Looking Around": The Fish Tale, Super Senses, A Snake Charmer's Story, From Tasting to Digesting, Seeds and Seeds, Experiments with Water, A Treat for Mosquitoes, Up You Go, Walls Tell Stories, Sunita in Space, What If It Finishes (fuels), A Shelter So High, When the Earth Shook, Blow Hot Blow Cold, Across the Wall, No Place For..., and Whose Forests? The questions are comprehension-style — a child who can retell each chapter in their own words and explain the "why" behind every activity usually scores well here.
Mathematical and Numeracy Skill Test (25 marks) — from NCERT Class 5 Maths: The Fish Tale, Shapes and Angles, How Many Squares?, Parts and Wholes, Does It Look the Same?, Be My Multiple — I'll Be Your Factor, Can You See the Pattern?, Tenths and Hundredths, Area and Its Boundary, and Smart Charts. Note the emphasis: factors and multiples, area and boundary, and fractions-and-decimals are the repeat performers. A coach drills these three clusters hardest because they combine concept questions with fast computation.
Language (English) Test (25 marks) — not literature, but functional grammar: adjectives and nouns (identifying them in a passage), simple past tense, question words (how, what, when, where, why), opposite words with un-/in-/dis-/im- prefixes, punctuation, pronouns, exclamatory words, and — the high-value skill — reading comprehension from unseen passages. A student who reads one unseen passage daily for two months converts this section from a weakness into a banker.
Eligibility, Application and Fee: What Is Known for 2027
For Class 6, the prospectus requires the statement of marks (grade card) of the qualifying examination — that is, the child's Class 5 record. Note that the prospectus publishes age criteria only for Nursery, Prep and Class 1 (minimum and maximum age as on 31 March); for Class 6 it asks for the qualifying-exam record instead. Admission to Class 6 is offered at three JMI schools: Jamia Senior Secondary School, Jamia Girls Senior Secondary School (self-financed), and Syed Abid Husain Senior Secondary School (self-financed).
The application is submitted online on JMI's admission portal (jmicoe.in). For the 2026-27 cycle, the application fee was Rs 500 for Indian candidates and Rs 1,500 for foreign nationals and NRI wards, and the test was held across multiple cities — Delhi, Lucknow, Patna, Kolkata and Srinagar. The 2027-28 fee and centre list are EXPECTED to stay similar but will only be confirmed when the notification releases, expected in October–November 2026.
The 12-Week Coaching Plan Coaches Actually Use
Once the pattern is understood, coaching becomes an allocation problem: roughly half the study effort goes to EVS, a quarter to maths speed work, and a quarter to English. Here is the phased plan our coaching batches follow:
| Phase | Weeks | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | 1–4 | Finish all 17 EVS chapters with chapter-wise one-page summaries; maths concept chapters (fractions, factors, area); one unseen passage daily |
| Pattern work | 5–8 | 50-25-25 section-wise question drills; timed 25-question maths sets; grammar rules applied to passages |
| Mocks | 9–11 | Full 100-mark, 2-hour OMR mocks every 3–4 days; error log for every wrong EVS concept and every slow maths question |
| Temperament | 12 | Two final mocks, no new chapters; revise the error log; practise the no-negative-marking rule — attempt all 100, never leave blanks |
Two coaching habits make the difference. First, an error log: every wrong mock answer recorded with the correct concept in one line — by week 10, this log becomes the most valuable revision material. Second, EVS narration: the child explains each chapter aloud as if teaching. If they can do that without the book, the 50-mark section is secured.
JMI Class 6 vs AMU Class 6: Where Coaching Changes
Parents in our batches often target both Jamia and AMU schools. The papers demand different strategies: AMU adds a 15-mark interview stage (with a 40% language floor) to its 85-mark written test, while JMI's Class 6 selection is decided entirely by the 100-mark written test. AMU spreads weight more evenly; JMI puts half its marks on EVS — so a child weak in maths but strong in reading has a relatively better shot at JMI, while AMU rewards the child who can also face an interview panel. Our full breakdown of the AMU Class 6 paper is in this pattern-and-plan guide, and the direct comparison of the two schools is covered in AMU vs JMI: which should your child target. Our JMI entrance coaching batches at JGPS run the 12-week plan above from Class 5 onward, alongside this parent's walkthrough of how the batches are structured.
