"Jamia is a Muslim university — won't everything be in Urdu?" It is the single most common question our counsellors at JGPS hear from parents in Amroha and western UP who are considering Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) schools for Class 6 or Class 9 admission. The worry is understandable: Jamia's name, its history and its reputation all carry an Urdu association. But here is the honest, verified answer: your child does not need to know Urdu to apply, to write the entrance test, or to study in most Jamia schools. Urdu is part of Jamia's heritage and its curriculum — but it is not a barrier to admission.
This is a practical explainer built from Jamia's own official schools prospectus and admission notifications. Hard facts are labelled CONFIRMED (from an official source) or EXPECTED (best available pattern, not yet notified).
Last verified: October 24, 2026.
1. The Entrance Test Is Set in Three Languages — Hindi Included (CONFIRMED)
Jamia's official schools prospectus states that the admission test papers for Classes VI, IX and XI are set in English, Hindi and Urdu. In practice this means a Hindi-medium child from a UP board school can walk into the test centre and attempt the entire paper — EVS, maths, everything except the English-language section — in Hindi.
For UP families, the most convenient of the five official test cities is Lucknow (the others are Delhi, Patna, Kolkata and Srinagar) — CONFIRMED from JMI's 2026-27 admission announcement. The Class 6 paper is 100 MCQs in 2 hours (EVS 50, Maths 25, English 25), there is no negative marking, and the qualifying mark is 33% — all CONFIRMED from the official prospectus. If you want the full pattern breakdown, see our JMI Class 6 pattern and syllabus guide.
2. Jamia Middle School Officially Teaches in English, Hindi or Urdu (CONFIRMED)
This surprises most parents. Jamia's official admission notification for Jamia Middle School — the co-educational school for Classes I to VIII that your child joins after clearing the Class 6 entrance — states: "The medium of instruction and examination shall be English, Urdu or Hindi." A Hindi-medium family is not an exception at Jamia Middle School; the institution is formally built for all three languages.
3. At Senior Secondary Level the Main Schools Are English-Medium — Except One (CONFIRMED)
The picture changes after Class 8, and this is the part parents must get right:
| School | Classes | Medium of Instruction | Note for Non-Urdu Families |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jamia Middle School (co-ed) | I–VIII | English / Hindi / Urdu | Best entry point for Hindi-medium families |
| Jamia Senior Secondary School | IX–XII | English | Child should be comfortable in English by Class 9 |
| Syed Abid Husain Sr. Sec. School (self-financed, co-ed) | Prep–XII | English | Test available in Hindi/Urdu; teaching in English |
| Jamia Girls Sr. Sec. School (self-financed, girls only, evening shift) | IX–XII | Urdu Medium | The one genuinely Urdu-medium option — for Urdu-background families |

4. Why Urdu Keeps Appearing: Jamia's Founding Mission
A little history explains the confusion. Jamia Millia Islamia was founded in 1920 at Aligarh and shifted to Delhi in 1925 — CONFIRMED from the prospectus's own history section. Its founding constitution declared that "the medium of instruction in the Jamia Millia Islamia at all stages of education and in all its instruction shall be Urdu" (quoted in a 2001 Delhi High Court judgment, Mohd. Naseem vs JMI). That was the founding mission a century ago. Today the schools run in three languages — but Urdu remains woven into the curriculum, which brings us to the one rule every family should know.
5. The One Rule: Beginners Get "Elementary Urdu" — Nobody Is Expected to Arrive Fluent (CONFIRMED)
Jamia's prospectus requires "Elementary Urdu (compulsory for Class VI students who have not studied Urdu up to class V)". Read that carefully: it is the school itself saying — if your child has never studied Urdu, we will teach it from the alphabet up. Urdu script is phonetic and highly regular, and children who already read Hindi typically pick up the script in weeks because the grammar and vocabulary overlap enormously. At JGPS we treat this as a small bridge course, not a reason to avoid Jamia. Our JMI entrance coaching includes Urdu-script basics for exactly this reason.
6. The One Real Trap: Confusing Test Medium with Teaching Medium
The entrance test lets you choose Urdu. That does not mean the classroom runs in Urdu. A child who writes the Class 9 test in Urdu but joins Jamia Senior Secondary School will study physics, chemistry and maths in English. So choose the test language to maximise your child's score — almost always their strongest school language — and separately verify the teaching medium of the school you are targeting. Parents targeting Class 9 admission should be especially careful here, because English comfort becomes non-negotiable at the senior secondary stage. (For comparison, AMU's school entrance offers the same English/Hindi/Urdu three-language option — this is standard practice at India's central-university schools, not a Jamia quirk.)
Practical Checklist for Non-Urdu Families (2027 Session)
- Pick the test language your child is strongest in. Hindi is fully allowed — do not pick Urdu out of respect for the institution's name; pick what scores marks.
- Verify the teaching medium of your target school (table above), not just the test medium.
- Start Urdu script basics 2–3 months early if your child has never studied Urdu — Jamia's Elementary Urdu will do the rest.
- Plan for Lucknow as the test centre if you are in UP — closest official centre to Amroha.
- Watch for the 2027 notification. As of late September 2026 it was not yet out; based on last year's pattern, forms are EXPECTED around November 2026 with a ₹500 application fee for Indian candidates (2026-27 figure, CONFIRMED). Track dates on our JMI admission eligibility and process page.
