Is your child in Class 3 or 4? Are you thinking about when to start preparing for Navodaya or Sainik School? A lot of parents say "he is too young, we will start later." That is the biggest mistake you can make.
Every year, about 25 lakh children take the Navodaya exam. Most of the students who get selected started preparing from Class 4 or 5. Children who started just 2-3 months before the exam have a success rate of only about 8%. Starting at the right time matters a lot.
What Is the Right Age? — Class-Wise Guide
| Exam | Admission Class | Start Preparation | Months Before Exam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navodaya (JNVST) | Class 6 | From Class 4 | 12-18 months |
| Sainik School (AISSEE) | Class 6 | From Class 4 | 12-18 months |
| AMU Class 6 | Class 6 | From Class 5 | 8-12 months |
| Vidyagyan | Class 6 | From Class 5 | 6-10 months |
Start Navodaya and Sainik School preparation from Class 4. That is the ideal time.
Month-by-Month Plan for 12 Months
Month 1-2: Build basics. Strengthen math concepts like fractions, decimals, multiplication, and division. Study 1 hour daily. Learn Hindi grammar basics.
Month 3-4: Understand the syllabus. Look at the complete exam syllabus. Start Mental Ability practice. Solve 20 puzzles daily for 20 minutes.
Month 5-6: Subject-wise preparation. Set separate time for Math, Hindi, English, and GK. Study 2-3 hours daily.
Month 7-8: Practice papers. Solve 2 practice papers every week. Use a timer. Note down mistakes.
Month 9-10: Fix weaknesses. Spend more time on weak subjects. Solve previous year papers.
Month 11-12: Revision and mock tests. Take one mock test daily. Revise weak topics. Do not study anything new.
How Many Hours Per Day?
| Class | Daily Time | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Class 3-4 | 30 min — 1 hour | 18-24 months |
| Class 5 (beginning) | 1-2 hours | 12-18 months |
| Class 5 (mid-year) | 2-3 hours | 6-12 months |
| Class 5 (last few months) | 3-4 hours | 3-6 months |
Do not make young children sit for too long. 30 minutes is enough for Class 3-4 children. Increase gradually.
5 Essential Tips
Tip 1: Teach through games. Do not give boring textbooks to young children. Use puzzles, quizzes, and games. This keeps the child interested.
Tip 2: Read NCERT books. Both Navodaya and Sainik School syllabus is based on NCERT. Make sure your child reads Class 4 and 5 NCERT books.
Tip 3: Set a daily routine. Create a timetable for your child. Study at the same time every day. This builds a habit.
Tip 4: Do not pressure the child. Do not say "you have to get selected." That will scare the child. Teach with love and patience.
Tip 5: Take coaching help. If you cannot teach yourself, send the child to coaching. A good coach gives the right direction.
What If You Are Late?
If your child is in Class 5 and preparation has not started yet, do not panic. Six months of hard work can also lead to selection. But the child needs to study 3-4 hours daily. Start with previous year papers to understand the pattern.
