Should you send your child to Sainik School or Rashtriya Military School (RMS)? Most parents fill one form without checking the difference, and later wish they had known more. Both schools prepare children for a career in the Indian Armed Forces. But they differ in fees, who can apply, and how many students get into NDA.
What Is the Difference?
Sainik Schools are run by India's Ministry of Defence. There are 33 Sainik Schools across India. Any child can apply, even if the parent is not in the military.
Rashtriya Military Schools (RMS) are run by the Indian Army. There are only 5 RMS in India. Only children of defence personnel can apply. Civilian children are not eligible.

When to Choose Sainik School
If you are not in the military, Sainik School is your only option. RMS will not accept your child's application.
Sainik School fees are very low. Just Rs. 1,500 to 3,000 per year. Food, hostel, books, everything is included. If your budget is tight, this is the best choice.
Sainik Schools now accept girls too. Since 2021, all Sainik Schools have opened admissions for girls in Class 6.
When to Choose RMS
If you serve in the Army, Navy, Air Force, or paramilitary forces (CRPF, BSF, CISF etc.), RMS is the better option.
RMS has one big advantage. About 70% of its students get selected for NDA. That is much higher than Sainik School's 30-40%. If your child wants to become an army officer, RMS gives the best shot.
But RMS fees are higher. Rs. 1.3 to 1.5 lakh per year. Still much cheaper than private boarding schools.
5 Mistakes Parents Make
Mistake 1: Filling RMS form without checking eligibility. If you are not in the military, your child cannot apply to RMS.
Mistake 2: Not checking fees. Sainik School is almost free, but RMS costs Rs. 1.5 lakh per year.
Mistake 3: Preparing for only one school. Both exams have almost the same syllabus. Prepare for both.
Mistake 4: Choosing RMS for girls. RMS does not accept girls. Sainik School is the only option.
Mistake 5: Ignoring NDA rate. RMS has 70% NDA rate vs Sainik School's 30-40%.

| If Your Situation Is | Choose This |
|---|---|
| Not in the military | Sainik School |
| Low budget | Sainik School |
